West Haven Animal Control Adoption Policy

We welcome adoption inquiries from far and wide! To adopt from us, you will need to fill out an application, which will then have to be approved by our Animal Control Officers. If you already have another dog, we will schedule a time for you to bring your other pet to introduce the two of them. We have areas set up at the shelter to properly introduce both animals to observe how they get along together. Please note, animals are not adopted on a first come, first serve basis. We need to make sure it will be the best match for both you and the animal. Adoption hours are 11am to 3pm EVERY DAY. We take in and adopt out an enormous number of animals. Some animals come and go very quickly. If you see an animal you like on one of our many social media sites, come visit us or contact the shelter to speak with an Animal Control Officer. Even if the animal you were interested in has been adopted, we may have others that haven't been posted yet due to legal time frames.

Adoption Application

Simply fill out the entire application and provide the application to an Animal Control Officer for review.

Have another pet?

Animal Control Officer will have to schedule a meet and greet with both animals to ensure a safe living environment for both animals.

History Check

Animal Control Officers complete a history check of all applicants utilizing West Haven Police Department address search to confirm there is no history of animal cruelty or animal mistreatment in the past. Animal Control Officers need to confirm that the our animals are being adopted out to a safe loving home.

The Review

Animal Control Officers conduct a full review of the Application to ensure the application is filled out with every question answered.

Have a Landlord?

Animal Control Officers have to contact the building management or Landlord to confirm that pets are allowed on the premise.

Did your application get approved?

Once Animal Control approves the application you will be contacted with a date and time to come meet your new furry friend!
